To My3Girls, My True North
I was holding on, but barely breathing… You saved my life, now I promise to save yours.
I have had the pleasure of getting to know J- over the past year and a half. Her daughters and her story have been slowly shared with me as I’ve spent time with her family. It is full of heartache, pain, hiding, fear and struggle. But through her warrior spirit, faith, and love for her daughters she broke out of their imprisonment. She went from darkness to light, from abused to adored, from hurt to healed. She met her husband S- while still in survival mode. He tenderly stayed by her side as she began to breathe again. He saw their beauty and they found joy together. J- no longer has to fight. Through S- she found a place to land, and through J- he has a family more incredible than any he could have imagined. They were made to be together. They are an eternal family.
J- approached me with an idea for a photo shoot. She didn’t want to pretend that their past hadn’t happen, nor did she want to dwell on it. She wanted her daughters to know they were not victims. These images show their fighting spirits, triumph over adversity, beauty through pain and love for each other.
Here are her words:
I was once imprisoned in a dark world by misguided information, unhealthy generational behavior patterns, and poor choices. My senses became dull, my light was fading, and I became unaware of my options. I survived is this bleak existence, but for how much longer?
I was holding on, but barely breathing. I was surviving but I wasn’t thriving. I had lost my way. Then you came.
A True North. What is it? It is a singular passion in life that can leave a legacy, empower others or make the world a better place to live. My Children, you are my True North. You saved my life. I vow to give you yours.
I Vow never to steal your laughter away. I vow to protect you. To stand up for you. To fight for you. I am your advocate. I am your Mother. I will teach you to act for yourselves and not be acted upon. I will throw away the fear and grasp the faith as I raise you up. I will acknowledge that fear and faith cannot coexist. I will rely on the spirit to enlighten me and quicken my senses as a mother. I vow to cherish your uniqueness. I will not shun you for it. Your differences are important and valuable. They are needed to bring balance, contrast, beauty and harmony to this world. I will help you sift through the controversies and conflicts of this world to find the truths. I will lay before you a feast of truth and righteousness and bid you to come partake.
Oh my sweet girls, our lives were not shattered and left in a heap of ruins. But rather, we were as the Caterpillar living in dark cocoon and we broke free. Now your wings are spreading, the scales have been shed from our eyes and you are all so beautiful! To the World, we had nothing when we left. But the world can only see in one dimension and is blind to the miraculous ways of a caring Heavenly Father. We were watched over, blessed and encircled about in his loving arms as we ventured out to make a new life. We had Angels living amongst us. They cared for us, administered to our needs and loved us. We were not left wanting. We had all we needed and we had each other. We still do and we are finally safe.
